A More Gorgeous Right Hand From Terence Crawford: GIF Spotlight

Before Terence Crawford became a p4p name, and recently the ESPN FOTY (again), he took on a prospect named Andre "Gorgeous" Gorges, and while Gorges may've won the nickname contest, he certainly did not win the fight. Gorges bravely battled Crawford as best as he could but Crawford, at a significant height disadvantage, was punching with venom, even in his jabs, from round one. In rounds four and five, Crawford's punches finally took their toll and put Gorges on the canvas. Gorges got back up during round four. During round five, however, Crawford borrowed a right hand from the devil himself to make sure Gorges didn't get up again. Get a load of this hellacious finisher:

Muhammad Ali's Greatest Subtle Feint: GIF Spotlight

Before The Greatest, Muhammad Ali, took on Ron Lyle in May of 1975, Howard Cosell interviewed him and wanted a look at his belly. Muhammad obliged, but he didn't let Howard get away without his patented toupee feint. You see, he works the pointer, then it makes a sneaky conversion into the snatch-feint. Somehow, after all those years together, Cosell still didn't see it coming.

Sugar Ray Leonard's Ornery Debut Challenge: GIF Spotlight

On the fifth of February, 1977, the great Sugar Ray Leonard made his pro debut against a no-nonsense journeyman named Luis Vega, and Vega did not show up to showcase Leonard. He came to have a fight. Everyone, including Ray, seemed to appreciate that, and when Vega gutted Ray into the ropes, Ray had a laugh and a mug for him, in this ornery debut bout. Commentators, even from Sugar's debut, were comparing him to Ali because of it.

When You Think You've Won And They Cheat You: Reaction GIF Spotlight

Any fan of boxing history can get a chuckle at the Highlander TV series' take on the way it used to be. Adrian Paul, with Rick Faraci as his opponent, gets a bit of a letdown after taking part in a bare-knuckle rumble to last the distance, as police on horseback break it up. If you've ever read the shenanigans of the time period for our sport, you know this isn't exactly exaggerated for television. This was boxing's wild west period. The corruption rarely involves horses, these days. Judges, referees, sanctioning bodies, athletic commissions and promoters, but not usually horses.

Mojahed Fudailat took to Twitter, Facebook and Youtube with a hysterical post-fight animation, starring Vasyl Lomachenko and Guillermo Rigondeaux in The Matrix. It brought some much-needed levity to a sad effort by Rigondeaux, as far as I'm concerned. This GIF comes from that video (he has several) and here is the full video (and, yes, the comments have already covered the spelling error so relax a little bit!):

Highlander's Old Timey Boxing Show: GIF Spotlight

Over the years of romance and adventure set throughout history, the Highlander television series took on a few boxing references, but one episode revolved around the fight game (no Lampley reference). It was entitled "The Fighter." In it, Adrian Paul's character got a chance to do some old-timey bare-knuckle boxing with his friend, stuntman and martial arts champion Rick Faraci, playing the opponent. Also seen here in the four GIF's is the fine Hill Street Blues actor Bruce Weitz, as something happens in the ring which should probably never happen. I think. Swords in the ring are prohibited by most athletic commissions. Beheadings and explosions...I'm not sure about those. They might actually be encouraged.

Billy Joe Saunders' Son Weakens Willie Monroe Junior Before His Title Challenge

In the only time I have ever witnessed such an event, major middleweight titlist Billy Joe Saunders' son decides to punch challenger Willie Monroe Junior in the groin, and kick him as well. I'm pretty sure he also cursed at and made a vulgar gesture to Monroe Junior as well. That said, to the delight of commentators, he also apologized to him on camera after the match, when Saunders gave his son the microphone. This is one of the more unusual ways Saunders has been involved in controversy.

BGB GIF Spotlight: Billy Joe Saunders Gets Censored

Well, you know we love to GIF things here more than anything. As mentioned earlier, Billy Joe Saunders exposed himself to a Canadian crowd today and Golden Boy Boxing's Facebook page did not both to censor the two frames of Gypsy peekaboo that were played. We, however, did bother.

Billy Joe Saunders Exposes Himself, Then Golden Boy Exposes Him Too (NSFW Spotlight)

Folks, I have seen a lot of things at weigh-ins. I've seen fighters slap, hug, kiss, bite, and more than a few strip scenes, but this is a new chain of events for me. Today, about 8 hours ago, Golden Boy Boxing's Facebook page released uncensored footage of Billy Joe Saunders, who has had issues at weigh-ins before, caught in group dyslexia! First, David Lemieux must re-weigh himself after taking his underwear off, with the standard two helpers covering him from the audience. This is fairly normal. Then, in comes Billy Joe, yapping like an excited pooch, yelling about Lemieux getting weighed again. So, Lemieux weighs himself yet again to show that yes, definitely, he made the weight, no funny business.

Now, Billy Joe, without first weighing himself WITH his underwear on, steps to the scale, yapping, and immediately pulls off his undershorts, exposing himself to the audience, THEN proceeds, in the blink of a type of eye, backwardly, to cover his genitalia with his hand, and only then, as if everyone in the room realizes they're operating in reverse, the two helpers put the cover in front of him to shield the audience and protect them from the undoubted trauma. I can't say the pre-fight entertainment has been without humour. To top it off, Golden Boy not bothering to censor it on their page-...I don't know what to say. Even HBO and Showtime would likely have censored the few frames of Gypsy peekaboo. We have entered a new age in sport, ladies and gentlemen.

Al Bernstein Becomes Al Burnstein For Teddy and Stephen (Social Media Spotlight)

ESPN's Teddy Atlas and Stephen A. Smith had another dramatic play, after ESPN nailed a mega p4p event in Vasyl Lomachenko VS Guillermo Rigondeaux. It was a play which I greatly enjoyed for its over-the-top absurdity. But the excellent Al Bernstein...not a fan of this style. At least, that is what I take away from his Twitter feed.

Ya gotta love it.

Gym Humour: Vasyl Lomachenko Dresses For Success

In one of the best examples of gym humour I've seen recently, major Super Featherweight title holder Vasyl Lomachenko shows up as a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle. I spotted this on the Facebook channel "Only Full Fights" and had a laugh. Train seriously, dress less so.

Putting together a long list of big names and a longer list of lines falling flat, it wasn't all bad. Subjectively speaking.

GIF Spotlight: BHOP Starts Push-Up Contest!

In 2011, The great Bernard Hopkins, not long after doing push-ups during the fight, decides to show again how daisy-fresh he is. This time, his opponent, Jean Pascal, refuses to make concessions and dives to the canvas in the background. In the lead-up, Hopkins taunted Pascal for being a "four-round fighter" to insult his stamina. Hopkins defeated a man 18 years' his junior that night. With respect to Pascal, he won the push-up contest too.

GIF Spotlight: BHOP Fitness Exhibition 2011

The great Bernard Hopkins' record-breaking performance against Jean Pascal in their 2011 rematch did not lack humour anymore than it lacked drama. Here is the old man doing pushups for what is likely a mix of showmanship and psychological warfare as his opponent watches on. I wonder if Referee Ian John-Lewis ever had to warn a fighter for exercising during the round before.
